Jennifer Hochell speaks at Nature’s Sunshine National Convention (part 3)

Essential oils have many characteristics. All 100% pure, unadulterated essential oils are antibacterial and antioxidants. They vary in properties of antiviral, antifungal, anti-infectious, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, etc. essential oils are concentrated extracts that are distilled or cold-compressed (citrus) from roots, leaves, barks, flowers, berries, peel, seeds, wood, resins and bark. They are are 50-100 times more potent than their herb form.

To understand aromatherapy, it is essential to understand the olfaction process. Our olfactory system is responsible for our sense of smell (which is also responsible for how to taste). It is the one place where the nervous system is in direct contact with the external environment, at all times. Smelling begins by inhaling through the nose. The aroma vapors travel to the olfactory epithelium (special mucus membrane at roof of nasal cavity) where the odors penetrate and dissolve into this mucus membrane. The cilia (hair-like structures that are tips of olfactory nerves) grab and relay this information deep into the brain known as the limbic system. Essential oils contact the limbic system in less than 1 second when inhaled and within 1-3 seconds when applied topically. Every body is different and some people may respond faster to certain scents than others.

To really help others connect with aromatherapy and find the right scents for them, I conduct what I call Olfactory Sensory Testing™ (OST). Essential oils that work best for emotional and mental concerns are the ones that you like the most. Simply, waft an essential oil bottle from side to side under the nose, without touching the nose and take a deep breath. Do you like it? On a scale of 1-10, 10 being the best, and 1 being the worst, where does the scent rank? I try to incorporate all of the oils that receive a 6 or higher into the custom blend. Of course, combine the amount of oils that you are comfortable with, whether 2 oils or 20 oils. When I am working with physical concerns, it is not as important to conduct OST as with emotional concerns

Your Life Story through Journaling

Have you ever taken a few moments to stop and think about the path your life has taken?
Our lives are filled with events, people and situations that shape us. What lessons have you learned along the way? Are you still learning some of these lessons? When we come to an understanding that we learn everyday, we are able to embrace each new day with anticipation, passion and awareness. Through the toughest times, this can be challenging.

Can we suddenly just figure things out?? Wouldn't that be great!
But, actually would we be cutting our self off from experiencing new adventures, people and situations? We continue to evolve each day and are given many opportunities to work on our inner health. So much energy and money can be spent by society on the outside health

So as we keep our minds and heart open, pay attention to those things around you and perhaps the deeper message. Ultimately, when we journal we listen to OUR voice, not all the other stimuli that fights for our attention. By getting quiet, we can listen to our inner voice and take that much needed time to reflect upon our life's story.

Join us for a Journaling Class on November 14th 5:30-7 p.m. Cost $35 Pre- registration required. 352 243 3588. The Clermont Herb Shop

Jennifer Hochell speaks at Nature’s Sunshine National Convention (part 2)

Aromatherapy Safety

There are some basic guidelines and safety precautions one should follow when using aromatherapy. Essential oils are a more concentrated form of herbs, flowers, leaves, roots, trees, bark and berries thus, less is needed. Essential oils are about 50-100 times more potent than its herb form. A few drops will be plenty to accomplish the results you are seeking. Her are some safety precautions I follow when using and blending essential oils.

1. Do not ingest.

2. Dilute essential oils before applying them to the skin. Undiluted essentials oils may cause irritation to the skin and should always be combined with a carrier before applying neat (or directly to the skin).

3. Citrus oils are photosensitive so avoid direct sunlight after use for at least 3-4 hours.

4. Use caution with pregnancy, high blood pressure, epilepsy and other serious health concerns.

5. Some essential oils may be too hormone balancing or heating for persons with these concerns.

6. If someone has an allergy to an actual plant or tree, they may have an allergy to the essential oil. For example, Chamomile is in the ragweed family so caution should be used for those allergic to ragweed.

7. Keep out of reach of children and those with dementia.

Jennifer Hochell speaks at Nature’s Sunshine National Convention (part 1)

The topic of Aromatherapy always seems to draw a lot of attention. At the Nature’s Sunshine National Convention held in Washington, DC from August 20-23, 2008, over 150 people attended the aromatherapy presentation, Custom Blending with Essential Oils: Integrating Herbs and Oils presented by Jennifer Hochell. Attendees received valuable information to help them understand the concepts of aromatherapy, how to use it, why to use and how to easily and effectively incorporate it into daily life. Here are some highlights:

Why Choose Essential oils?
Essential oils offer a wide variety of health benefits such as physical, mental, emotional and spiritual balance. It encompasses over 9000 years of history that supports, exemplifies and solidifies the therapeutic properties essential oils have to offer. It is also fun and empowering as it put control back in YOUR hands over YOUR health choices.

Aromatherapy Benefits
Essential oils are powerful tool that may alter, shift , change and adjust mood, emotion and physical issues. It has been historically known to help alleviate stress, skin irritations, depression and anxiety. It also helps our pets achieve over wellness.

Aromatherapy History
Egyptians are famous for employing aromatherapy for their mummification process. The Greeks integrated fragrances (at that time they were 100% pure, undiluted essential oils) into many of their rituals, ceremonies and personal care. Today, you can find some form of aromatherapy in many personal care and cleaning products. It also received prestigious recognition when Richard Axel and Linda Buck (both from the USA) won the 2004 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their discoveries of odorant receptors and their relationship to the organization of the olfactory system.

Quality of Aromatherapy
Why is quality important? Well, it will dictate the level of therapeutic value as well help reduce your exposure to chemical-based products. It is also important when working to enhance overall health and wellness. For example, you may feel relaxed when smelling a synthetic lavender candle but, the combination of synthetic ingredients may bombard and clog the lymphatic system with toxins rather than assist the body in eliminating toxins.

Clearing out the Clutter

Journaling can help us clear our minds and set goals for ourselves. When we think of clearing out the clutter we may think of throwing out old clothes and shoes. We may also decide to throw that old rug out that just never looked quite right in our living room. Have you ever stopped to check in with your feelings after you have cleaned out your clutter? Do you breathe a little easier? Do you feel less weighed down? Do you feel more creative?

Last week I cleaned my desk. This may sound like a small job to some, however, the piles were mounting and mentally my thoughts followed suit. We have distractions that play for our attention everyday. These distractions can be small and others are well warranted. When you have a home office it never fails to become the bottom of the list in regards to priorities.

After spending a few uninterrupted hours of organizing, filing and throwing out, my desk was a simple masterpiece! A clean and open desk seemed to have it's mental effects. I was able to get twice the amount of work done and felt at peace doing it! This made me think further about all the other physical clutter we posses and for some reason hold onto. How does this change our mental day to day focus and concentration?

So take some time to think about the clutter in your life. What do you want to let go of and what do you want to create more of? Physically when we let go of stuff that no longer serves us, emotionally, we may feel the cleansing benefits!

Join us for a journaling class, "Clearing out the Clutter" at the Clermont Herb Shop (352) 243- 3588

Aromatherapy for Influenza

All 100% pure, unadulterated essential oils are beneficial for influenza. They offer antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, decongestant, expectorant and antiseptic properties, just to name a few. Essential oils can revive cells and provide vital energy to keep immunity strong. A study conducted tested tears in individuals who just watched a sad movie and those cutting an onion. The immune system in those watching the sad movie was suppressed by more than 54% versus those cutting the onion.

There are many ways to use aromatherapy when combating cold and flu symptoms. Add some essential oils to Epsom salt and add to a warm bath, include in a massage oil or lotion and massage into muscles and joints, spray around the room to disinfect the and purify the air or add to a hot or cold towel and use as a compress on a specific area.

Tea tree essential oil is one of the most recognized and researched essential oils. It is commonly used for mold and fungal infections. It offers antifungal, antiviral, antiseptic and immune stimulant properties. Tea tree has been shown to assist the body during cold and flu, nail fungus, sinus infections, cold sores, warts and muscle and body aches. Emotionally it helps combat low self-esteem.

Eucalyptus essential oil was used in the late 1800’s to treat coughs and respiratory concerns. It’s antibacterial, antifungal, decongestant, analgesic, expectorant and febrifuge properties allow eucalyptus to be an air purifier, aid with sinus infections, muscle/body aches, improve circulation and combat fatigue. Emotionally it helps with feelings of being overwhelmed. Caution is recommended for those with epilepsy.

Pine essential oil was recommended by Hippocrates for pulmonary problems and throat infections. Its properties include antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, disinfectant, expectorant and deodorant. It is helpful for cold and flu, bronchitis, asthma, pneumonia, coughs, fatigue and muscle and body aches. Emotionally it helps with mental fatigue and exhaustion. Caution is recommended for those with prostate problems.

Guardian essential oil is a Nature’s Sunshine combination blend or lavender, chamomile, tea tree and ravensara. Ravensara is a strong antiviral essential oil and is a great remedy for any lung issue, cough, flu, bronchitis or pneumonia. This blend offers antiviral, antibacterial, decongestant and disinfectant properties while being used as a hand sanitizer, to relieve shingles, MS, chronic fatigue, skin issues and to purify the air. Emotionally it helps with grief and to promote feelings of safety.

Use any of these essential oils singly or in a combination as a chest rub for coughs and bronchitis or as a room spray to disinfect the air. Happy blending!

Clermont Herb Conference

I just wanted to take a moment to say KUDO's on an amazing job with the Clermont Health Conference, and introduce myself.

I really enjoyed how Clell Fowles shared his recent struggle with weight gain. This shows that accomplished, knowledgeable professionals in the wellness industry struggle with the same day to day challenges that we all do. I look forward to seeing him in the future to see how he used his knowledge and determination to overcome these adversities. I also want to share that the guest speakers made you laugh while learning. There wasn't a boring or wasted moment to be had.

My name is Monica Hickman, I have been working in the emergency medical field for over 8 yrs now. I just recently took my passion for helping others to the next level of starting my own homebased Natural Health and Wellness Coaching business. I have been blessed with the encouragement of Susan Matlock, Wendy Reilly and Lee Butler to Go For it! I love encouraging people that being average doesn't have to be a way of life. Having the opportunity to attend the Health Conference filled me with more ways to educate myself and my clients. Thank you again for making this possible!

My website is Naturalhealthandwellnesscoach.com it is still in the infant stages, but I'm having a so much fun learning to create it myself and grow at my own pace.

I just recently did a photoshoot on top of the Edgewater Hotel in Historic Downtown Winter Garden at Sunrise. It was Amazing! I have sat on top of this building many times over the past 11 years meditating and working through my thoughts. I thought it would be fun to do my Yoga and Workout routine with a photographer to capture photos for my web site. I will share the experience and some photos in a Blog soon.

Get Healthy and Be Happy, Monica aka Julep

WHY JOURNAL?

For many of us that are balancing numerous priorities in life and find it challenging to slow down to re-focus, finding time to journal can make a world of difference in our every day life. Some people feel that journaling should be implemented when life really throws you a curve ball.

I do believe journaling is incredibly healing when we are going through some painful life lessons. We can actually deprive ourself from this amazing self-help tool and resist journaling when times are tough and emotional. This can be a very important time to put paper to ink and to acknowledge the deep feelings that we may be experiencing.

Journaling can also be used daily to help us de-clutter our mind so we can do all those things on our list! Taking time to slow our minds down to reflect upon our day can bring a sense of peace, no matter how crazy the day has been. Carving out a few minutes to do something healthy for ourselves often gets put aside and we can feel stress and "overloaded".

These few minutes spent on oneself can give us the opportunity to reflect upon the events that have taken place during our day. We become in tune with our feelings and thoughts. We basically check in with ourselves versus remaining on "auto drive".

All you need is a journal and a pen- making the time is up to you!

Check out upcoming journaling classes at the Clermont Herb Shop.

Clermont Health Conference Huge Success

On Saturday, Sept 27th, The Herb Shoppes hosted the 2nd Annual Clermont Health Conference at Lake Sumter Community College. Our featured guest speaker Jay Vandel Heuvel kept the audience energized as he taught about general tips for a healthier lifestyle and the vital role of cleansing and detoxification.

Pharmacist Clell Fowles used real life stories to teach participants about the role prescription drugs play in depleting vital nutrients from the body. Some folks were surprised to learn that some of the pharmaceutical drugs that they are taking might be caused from the nutrients depleted by their other drugs.

A new component to the conference this year was the Herb Panel consisting of the local herb shoppe owners (Susan, Jennifer, Wendimere, Lee) as well as a special appearance by nurse Ashlie Overman, owner of one of the first herb shoppes in the country in Panama City. The panel shared personal stories and details about their favorite herb programs. Attendees loved the different perspectives, straight-forward answers and great information.

For those of you that missed the conference this year there are still educational opportunities available this year. Check with your local shoppe or stay tuned to the blog for more details.

Essentials Oils for Focus and Attention

Essential Oils for Focus and Attention
Essential Oils have historically been shown to enhance focus and attention. To understand this, first it is best to discuss the olfaction process. The nose is a protrusion of the brain. Scent enters the body in less than 1 second and travels to the pituitary and hypothalamus to tell your body how to respond to a situation. It will help to relax or stimulate. This message is then sent to the rest of the body via the nervous system

A study was conducted where the scent of lemon was diffused in room one while no scent was diffused in room two. The people that were exposed to lemon typed twice as fast and twice as accurate as those with no scent diffused. Other studies have shown increased Beta wave activity in Alzheimer’s patients when lavender is diffused – more alert and focused.

All 100% pure essential oils are antioxidants. They are in a sense CPR for the cells. They activate the body and mind and offer a variety of therapeutic benefits such as antibacterial and antiviral.

I find that the essential oils of rosemary, lemon, red mandarin, peppermint and tei fu are highly beneficial in promoting concentration, focus, memory recall, alertness and maintaining attention.

Rosemary essential oil is one of highest oxygen content essential oils (similar to CoQ10). It has been shown to help specifically with right-sided headaches. It is antibacterial, antiseptic, decongestant, astringent and hypertensive. Rosemary increases blood flow, combats brain fog and mental fatigue and enhances circulation. Emotionally, it may reduce forgetfulness, promote mental clarity and dispel confusion. Known contraindications are high blood pressure, pregnancy and epilepsy.

Lemon essential oil is a citrus oil. All citrus oils are photosensitive. The lemon scent is uplifting and sharp to help one stay focused and alert. It is antiviral, antiseptic, antifungal, diuretic, antibacterial and stomachic. Lemon has been known to help combat sluggishness, especially after eating, balancing pH and increasing white blood cells. Emotionally, it may combat depression, anxiety, jet lag and fatigue.

Red Mandarin essential oil has a sweet, fruity scent. It also, is a citrus essential oil and has been known to help with adrenal fatigue. I personally find that focus, concentration and memory issues may be related to adrenal weakness. Red Mandarin is antibacterial, antispasmodic, digestive and sedative. It is great for children, insomnia, indigestion, acne/oily skin, hiccups and stretch marks. It is also safe for pregnancy along with lavender. Emotionally, it may help with stress, anxiety, shock, nervous tension and moodiness.

Peppermint essential oil offers an invigorating, refreshing and rejuvenating scent to lift spirits and promote energy. It is historically known to aid with headaches and nausea. Peppermint is antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, febrifuge (fever), vasoconstrictive and an expectorant. Emotionally, it may help one take in new ideas (studying), stimulate focus and alertness.
Tei fu essential oil is a Chinese combination of wintergreen and other menthol containing essential oils. It offers a refreshing and uplifting scent. It helps open up the sinuses (breathing increases oxygen flow which may enhance memory and focus) and serves as an expectant. It is helpful to stay awake and alert when driving on long trips. Tei fu relieves aches and pains from sitting, typing or studying to long.

A Focus Attention Recipe that I often use is my Study Buddy Roll-on. I combine 2 drops each of essential oils of peppermint, lemon, red mandarin, rosemary and tei fu in a roll-on bottle with 4 drops Silver Shield liquid and the rest with Nature’s Sunshine Nature’s Fresh (plant-based enzymes).

Everyday Pollutants as Bad as Smoking

Think smoking is bad for you? Try just breathing. Louisiana scientists have discovered a group of previously undetected air pollutants that when inhaled exposes the average person to 300 times more free radicals than that of one cigarette in a day.

Health Tips-
Periodic whole body cleansing such as the Tiao He Cleanse, Dieter's Cleanse, or Enviro-Detox combined with manual and herbal Lymphatic Drainage is a excellent way to help your body detoxify from harmful chemicals found in our everyday lives.

If you are trying to quit smoking try switching to organic cigarettes first. By doing this you'll just have to break the chemical addiction and can tackle the nicotine addiction at a later time.

My favorite products to help aid in the quest to stop smoking include Distress Remedy, Tea Tree Toothpicks, St Johns Wort/Lobelia blend, and a custom aromatherapy blend from JennScents.

Five Financial Costs of American Obesity

We know that being overweight isn't good for our health, but carrying extra weight costs more, too. Here are the top five costs associated with obesity.

Need help with your weight loss program? Stop by one of the shoppes to find a weight loss aid to fit your needs. Adding things as simple as digestive enzymes, fiber, and a custom aromatherapy blend are an easy way to get started.

My personal favorites are Nutri-Burn shakes, SF, CelluSmooth, and Collatrim (great for carb cravings.) I also like to add freshly made veggie juices as a dinner replacement once per week and two slices of Ezekiel bread daily.

Lastly if you tend to be holding extra weight around your mid section consider whole body cleanses such as Tiao He or Dieter's Cleanse and watch your sugar intake. If sugar is a real problem for you ask about customized candida cleanses.

Aromatherapy for Unwanted Invaders

I’d like to share some aromatherapy tips and ideas for using essential oils to aid and assist with unfriendly and un-welcomed invaders.

Aromatherapy has historical data dating back over 9000 years describing its antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral and anti-infectious properties, just to name a few. Hospitals during WWII used essentials oils of lemon, clove and thyme to disinfect the hospitals. There are several oils that may prove beneficial in fighting or combating infections, viral concerns such as warts and herpes, fungal skin irritations maybe from yeast and candida, and bacterial issues such as MRSA and staph infections.

All 100% pure essential oils are antibacterial. They vary in other properties such as antiviral, antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and so on. Today, we are going to talk about those oils that are all 4 - antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral and anti-infectious.

Oregano is one of the strongest essential oils I have found to fight severe staph and MRSA infections. I especially like to add it to the silver shield gel. Oregano is antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral. It can be irritating to the skin so it needs to be diluted in carrier such as massage oil, gel or plant based enzymes. Emotionally, it is

Thyme is another great choice to fight fungal, viral and bacterial infections. It too can be irritating to the ksin so diluting it in a carrier is highly recommended. There are times when I’ve had customers apply Thyme neat (undiluted) to the top of a wart to help destroy it (applied with a Q-tip so the drop didn’t run down the skin. Emotionally, thyme may help

Clove is historically known for its analgesic (pain-relieving) properties. It has been commonly known to fight gum infections when applied topically. If there is an infection anywhere on the body, this can be added to a blend to bring some quick pain relief. This oil too can be irritating to the skin so it should be diluted although I have applied it undiluted to a toothache and got great results. Just be careful to not touch the lips or side of the mouth as this area may go numb and you may slobber.

Tea Tree is one of the most researched essential oils. It is commonly used for toenail fungus. Personally, I find that it works much more effectively when combined with Patchouli, plant-based enzymes and silver shield and sprayed topically several times throughout the day. Tea tree is an astringent, antiseptic, antibacterial and antiviral. It can help clean a wound, fight infected acne, cuts, scrapes and ingrown nails or hair. Emotionally, tea tree

Nature’s Fresh, which is a plant-based enzyme spray is very activating to the body – physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. When applied topically or taken internally, it may drive the formula deeper into muscles, tissues, tendons, ligaments and bone. So for infections deep within the body, I like to use this as my base and add oils of thyme and frankincense as these oils have some of the highest potential for going deep into the body. If you take this internally, I would not recommend adding any essential oils unless you’ve had proper training or are working with a trained aromatherapist.

Nature’s Sunshine’s Detoxification Homeopathic is a great addition to any anti-infectious program. You can take it straight or add several droppers to any aromatherapy blend. Stay healthy!

Aromatherapy Benefits for Animals

Aromatherapy has been around for centuries. It is commonly used in skin care products, to flavor foods and disinfect hospitals. Humans have become accustomed to nice, refreshing and relaxing scents surrounding us in the bathroom, the kitchen and workplace. Well, aromatherapy is not just for humans, it is equally beneficial for animals too. Animals have a powerful and heightened sense of smell and respond very quickly to aromas. Scent to an animal can dictate if they are in a safe environment or if they are in danger. Historically, we have seen animals employed to sniff out the scent of missing people and drugs. Their heightened sensitivity to smell is an example of the significance and importance scent may play on emotions, behavior and physical concerns. Aromatherapy for Circulation and Vitality

Hi everyone, I want to share some aromatherapy tips with you when working on aiding circulation and overall well-being.

Aromatherapy is highly beneficial when it comes to improving or maintaining circulation, combating high or low blood pressure, calming heart palpitations and enhancing overall vitality.

Rosemary is a common essential oil when we think of the circulatory system. It is one of the essential oils highest in oxygen so think of CoQ10 in comparison. Rosemary stimulates circulation thus making it a good choice for those who have cold extremities, varicose or spider veins, lack of oxygen to the heart or brain (for things like memory, concentration, focus and forgetfulness). It would be great to add to an herbal program when someone is taking CoQ10, ginkgo, gotu kola or Nature’s Sunshine’s Brain Protex. I am always conservative so, I use caution when using rosemary with those with high blood pressure as it may stimulate circulation thus provoking a rapid heartbeat or induced sweating. I also do not use it with those with epilepsy or during pregnancy. Emotionally, rosemary can help move stagnant emotions. This is for someone who is or has experienced the same emotions or situation for a long time and can’t seem to get past something. Listen for those people saying the same things over and over like health concerns, feeling, challenges. It provides energy, enhances movement and may provoke creativity.

For those with high blood pressure, ylang ylang may be beneficial. It has been historically linked to helping lower blood pressure by reducing heat and inflammation. It can calm heart palpitations, anxiety and help balance the body’s overall function. Emotionally, ylang ylang is great to mend a broken heart, work through grief and any issue of the heart. It is also beneficial during a menstrual cycle or menopausal symptoms to help balance excess heat. For those with neither high nor low blood pressure and to maintain balance, combine ylang ylang with lavender.

Cinnamon is helpful to increase circulation and promote movement. It is beneficial for sore, tense and stiff muscles as it aids in reduces stagnation and promoting elimination. It is antispasmodic and a stimulant. Great during menstruation to promote flow and reduce cramping or during labor to promote uterine contractions. Cinnamon helps to combat sluggishness, sleepiness and fatigue. In high amounts, cinnamon has been found to offer blood-thinning properties so it is best to avoid use if on blood-thinners. Emotionally, cinnamon helps one to feel at home, safe, secure and is like giving yourself a big hug.

Red Mandarin essential oil is wonderful for those needing a boost of energy to increase vitality. It is high in vitamin C and antioxidants, which are important to strengthen the walls of the capillaries to ensure proper circulation. Red mandarin feeds the adrenals, which in turn works with the thyroid, pancreas and reproductive system. If someone is experiencing problems with any of these areas, I work on feeding the adrenals to kick in some energy, which will stimulate movement. Emotionally, red mandarin helps with physical, mental and emotional exhaustion and fatigue. If you are making a blend for this reason, I like to use Nature’s Sunshine Nature’s Fresh Enzymes as my base as it is very activating, red mandarin and the homeopathic Fatigue/Exhaustion. I find this oil generally safe and it is one of three oils (the other two being lavender and chamomile) that I only use for women during pregnancy.

Nature’s Sunshine Varigone Cream is great to help reduce the appearance of varicose and spider veins. You can add in any of these essential oils to enhance its effect or use Nature’s Sunshine Cellutone discussed in the Weight Management tele-conference call last month. I’ve even applied this formula topically to rosacea areas after testing it on the skin first.

Aromatherapy for Weight Management

Hi, I’d like to share with you some aromatherapy options that may help you on your weight management journey. I’ll begin by giving a brief description of how aromatherapy works. Essential oils are very therapeutic and beneficial. They can help address physical, mental, emotional and spiritual concerns. When working with weight issues, all 4 of these modalities are very important.

Having the right mindset to activate the body is key to helping the body heal itself. All 100% pure essential oils are activators and can help with mood, behavior, attitude, addictions and motivation. The oils that work best in this situation are going to be the ones that you like the most. I personally conduct olfactory sensory testing with my customers to determine which scents they respond to the best. You can do this simply by taking any bottle of essential oil (such as red mandarin for example) and waft it under your nose from side to side. Take a deep breath and inhale the scent. Do you like it? On a scale of 1-10, 10 being the best, where does it rank? For me, if it ranks a 6 or higher, this means I would use it.

You can diffuse it in an Aromaball or nebulizing diffuser throughout the day or just add it to a blend such as a body spray or roll-on. Creating a blend with the oils that you like or just using a single essential oil, can help with emotional and mental connections we may have to weight issues, such as fear, anxiety, depression, grief and anger, regardless of overweight or underweight. Many times, weight issues are a result of something emotional that is going on, hence the term emotional eating. Some oils that are beneficial for eating addictions are bergamot and clary sage. You can smell the oil, diffuse it or make a roll-on.

Essential oils such as frankincense and myrrh can also help one connect spiritually but again, so will the oils that you like. You may like an oil one day and not the next and that’s okay because we are constantly changing and exposed to different situations so of course our emotions and needs are going to change.

On a physical level, there are oils that can help with the appearance of cellulite such as pink grapefruit, patchouli or the Nature’s Sunshine blend Cellutone. These oils may help to move a stagnant lymphatic system by breaking down toxins and assisting in stimulating circulation. Fat is just trapped toxins that need to be broken down so we can flush them out effectively. To make a great cellulite buster blend, combine some Nature’s Sunshine Cellutone Essential Oil blend into Nature’s Sunshine Herbal Trim Skin Treatment with some Nature’s Sunshine Detoxification Homeopathic to help enhance the effects for weight loss. Herbal Trim Skin Treatment is also nice to help tone the skin. You can even use it by itself as a moisturizer.

For someone with constipation, patchouli is a great oil as it helps one to let go – physically and emotionally. Many times if the bowels get moving, so does the weight. Again, smelling, diffusing, applying a roll-on blend topically to the abdomen area can help.

To help someone fight sugar cravings, pink grapefruit with a hint of cinnamon may be beneficial. To curb appetite, smell any of the culinary essential oils such as thyme, rosemary, cinnamon, grapefruit and so forth. You want to smell one oil at a time, by taking one oil and drafting it 6-8 times per nostril. This satiates the taste buds and satisfies your cravings.

The Health Chic Guide Now Available at Public Libraries

Wendimere Reilly's book, The Health Chic Guide: Hip, Fun, & Delicious Living is now being stocked by Baker & Taylor, one of the world's premiere distributors to public libraries as well as small independent bookstores. This is great news for us since this makes it very easy for your public library to stock our book.

This is where we need your help!!! It can be very costly to send out a direct mail campaign to the over 50,000 public libraries- and since most libraries will only order one or two copies there is a very low return on investment. But here at The Health Chic we think that libraries are a great community resource and would love to see our book available to those that either cannot afford to buy a copy of their own or choose to use the library system for sustainablility reasons.

The great news is that most librarians will order books based on user requests. So in most cases, all you have to do is ask. Since I don't think that I can legally or realistically have 50,000 library cards, I'm asking for your help. Please visit your local library and ask them to stock our book, It's that simple.

Here's how we are doing so far:

Brooklyn Public Library- NY (Boro & Central)
Detroit Public Library- MI (Chase)
Finger Lakes Library System- NY (Auburn-Seymour)
Great River Regional Library- MN (Elk River & Great River)
L. E. Phillips Memorial Public Library- WI
Lakeland Library Cooperative- MI (KDL Wyoming)
Lake Wales Public Library- FL
Mary L Cook Public Library- OH
Mount Prospect Public Library- IL
Oak Park Public Library- IL (Main)
Oakland Public Library- CA (Melrose)
Suffolk Cooperative Library System- NY (Bellport)
Winnefox Library System- WI (Oshkosh)

If you recognize any of the libraries above please ask your friends and relatives to check out a copy of our more. The more "check outs" the higher our rankings. We appreciate your support.

Healthy Reading!

Instructor: Lee Butler, Herbalist and Certified Natural Health Professional

Background:

Lee has been involved in the natural health field for over 13 years. After many health challenges at a young age and realizing that pharmaceutical drugs weren't giving her the relief she was looking for, she began to learn about taking an alternative approach.   Lee began to apply what she learned about herbs and healthy lifestyle changes. She dedicated herself to overcoming these health challenges and became passionate about teaching others.

At twenty-one years old, Lee opened her first Herb Shop.  She opened a second location a few years later.  Lee's education grew over the years as she attended numerous workshops throughout the U.S. with some of the top herbalists in the country. Lee was fortunate enough to attend classes with Dr. Bernard Jensen, world renowned Iridologist, author and educator. One of the highlights of her career was a recent trip to China to gain a deeper understanding of chinese medicine.

After  becoming an herbalist and a natural health professional, her love for natural health began to attract other women that wanted to continue what she had started .  Today, she continues to inspire others and can be found in the Clermont Herb Shoppe and facilitating workshops.  Lee's approach is about keeping things simple, getting to the root (whether physical or emotional), using common sense and ultimately listening to your body.
Her teaching style is fun, relaxed and welcoming.
