Curcumin BP

Curcumin BP in the latest high-quality products from Nature's Sunshine.  Most people associate curcumin with inflammation, which is only one of its amazing benefits.  Inflammation is huge, but more importantly, this formulation with the addition of black pepper enhances its potency and bioavailability by driving it in deeper at a cellular level.

Curcumin, a rhizome in turmeric and part of the ginger family, has also historically been shown to inhibit joint tissue breakdown, protects liver cells and is a neuro-protective (for the aging brain).  Other buzz words associated with curcumin is cardiovascular, psoriasis, eczema, stiffness, back pain, immune and memory.

My personal testimony...started coming down with body aches and a migraine about 2 weeks ago. I took 4 curcumin (2 capsules one hour apart) and it helped my headache/migraine and body aches go away.  I was pretty impressed and have used for various inflammation and muscle soreness situations and have been very pleased. It has been easy on the digestive system and not bothered my IBS, rather has helped it.

I would say an important one to have in your Herbal Cabinet.

In health, Jennifer

Amasai- Delicious, Easily Digestible

Amasai is a traditional food of the Maasai Tribe of East Africa.  It is a cultured dairy beverage renowned for nutrient density, digestibility and high probiotic and content.

Plus, at Beyond Organic all of our dairy comes from cows that eat grasses not grain and are never given hormones, steroids and antibiotics.  Each dairy cow is tested for A2 genetics.  If you or a loved one has given up dairy for health reasons, it would be worth your time to read about the benefits of A2 dairy.

Plain Amasai can be used in place of milk, buttermilk, or heavy cream for most recipes.  Rule of thumb is 2 parts water to 1 part Amasai for milk.  To use in place of buttermilk or cream it is an exact 1:1 ratio, so a cup of cream equals a cup of Amasai.

Amasai is great in smoothies, shakes, dressings, cheesecake, pancakes, and more.  Jordan even uses it to make  homemade ice cream & pieBe creative and send me your favorite recipe.  Here are a few that we hope you enjoy.

Homemade Sour Cream (courtesy of Denise D.)
1 cup  Amasai
1/4 cup white vinegar

In a screw-top jar or mason jar with lid, combine the Amasai and white vinegar. Shake the ingredients up a bit to thoroughly mix and let stand, covered, at room temperature for about 24 hours or until it becomes very thick.

You can store your sour cream in the refrigerator in the original jar you mixed it in (or use some other resealable container) for up to one week. Make sure that your sour cream is well chilled before using.

"Ranch" Style Salad Dressing (courtesy of LIsa G.)
1 C plain Amasai
1/2 C mayo (homemade with apple cider vinegar, olive oil, free-range eggs and sea salt so it's healthy)
1/2 T lemon jc.
1/2 T dried parsley or 2 T fresh
3/4 t Celtic sea salt
1 lg clove garlic pressed
1/8 tsp. black pepper
1/2 tsp. onion powder
1/2 tsp. dried dill weed
1/2 tsp. xanthan gum

Blend all ingredients and place in the refrigerator to let the flavors blend a couple hours.  (If this recipe seems sour to your tastebuds, leave out the lemon jc.)

Sprouted Grain Pancakes (courtesy Bill R.)
Use Arrowhead Mills Sprouted Grain Pancake Flour, substitute butter or applesauce for the canola oil.  Use Amasai instead of milk.  Top with organic butter and Grade B maple syrup.
Plain Amasai is sold in packs of 6 or in the variety pack (includes 2 bottles of each flavor.)  Email me if you need help logging in to your account.

Loving Your Lymph

I seem to be talking about the lymphatic system a lot these days.  It's my favorite body system and the unsung hero in maintaining optimal health.  Anyone that hangs out around me long enough, either by taking a class, stopping by the shop or just having tea, eventually all health conversations eventually lead to lymph.

For those of you that have taken classes with Dr Kim Balas and Steven Horne you are probably familiar with the concept of ABC+D.  Well when you give your lymph some TLC you hit all four principles.  Here's how:  It activates the emotional healing response, provides nutrient transport to build, assists with detoxification or cleansing, and works as a direct aid for many ailments.  I find working with the lymphatic system useful for respiratory issues, male & female reproductive challenges, and anyone struggling with multiple emotional blockages.  By the way, if you haven't take this course yet, I highly recommend it if you want to either be a better herbalist or just take better care of yourself.

So when working with the lymph where do you start?  Essential oils and flower essences are a great place to start.  When we talk about different organs holding on to specific emotions I find that the lymph system is very much connected.  So if you find you've been unable to work through a specific emotional concern look to adding some lymphatic support.

Herbally, I love Nature's Sunshine Lymphatic Drainage and Lymphomax and find adding these to any of your herbal protocols will enhance their effectiveness.  Manual lymphatic drainage is very useful.  It is a very light touch, noninvasive therapy, usually performed by a licensed massage therapist.  I personally had a breast fibroid disappear after just one session.

Making good food choices is critical if you want to maintain a healthy lymph system.  Avoiding commercial dairy products is huge.  Most of today's dairy products, organics included is very mucus forming and congests the lymph.  Choose raw dairy from a local farm and take some time to understand the A2 factor.  The Amasai from Beyond Organic seems to be working well for many people.

Lastly, I cannot say enough about the benefits of cultured whey for the lymphatic system.  I've been personally consuming the one from Beyond Organic (Suero Viv) consistently for the past six months and it has become my favorite elixir.  I still drink my kombucha and coconut water but as far as having an affinity for the lymph system nothing comes close.  It's my new "secret" ingredient that seems to be making my herbal protocols all work faster.   Also a great detox option, read my post on The Suero Cleanse.

Whether you are a natural health professional or someone looking to take better care of yourself, I can promise you that the more you understand and love your lymph the better you will look and feel.

The Suero Cleanse

When it comes to cleanses, I have done them all! Herbal, juice, wheatgrass, lemon juice, colonic, emotional, technological... So when Jordan Rubin, author of Living Beyond Organic and founder of Beyond Organic (a new food company) suggested a Suero Fast, I said Game On.

The fast consists of drinking 8oz of Suero Viv (cultured whey/essential oil beverage) every hour for 12 hours. We tried it yesterday as a family- me, my dog, and husband. I could only get down 32oz and had to stop because I was worried if I drank anymore I wouldn't be able to sleep. My husband Bill was able to drink 80 oz- the goal was 96oz. My dog drank 4oz and then demanded dinner.

So, even from our partial fast (we ended up eating a couple of sardines and an sprouted grain english muffin w/raw cheddar) we felt great. Cultured whey (different from isolated whey found in protein drinks) has been used for centuries as an all over curative. It was made popular by spas and healing resorts in Switzerland.

Cultured whey is a great source of potassium, flushes excess sodium (ie, ladies- helps with swelling) and is great for the lymphatic system (cellulite is the first thing that comes to mind here.) Clearing the lymphatic system can be beneficial for things like allergies, breast swelling, menstrual disorders, prostate issues, swollen hands, feet and legs. To learn more about the benefits of cultured whey check out the writings of Christopher Vasey.

So, after my personal experience I decided to create a modified version of the fast and incorporate it into a whole body cleanse. You can do this cleanse with any of your favorite seasonal herbal cleanses or by itself. And remember, while you don't necessarily need to fast from all foods, making better food choices will only enhance the effects. So, watch the sugar, wheat, and alcohol.

Suero Cleanse
Start with 4oz of Suero Viv on Day One. Increase to 16 oz (one bottle) on Day Two and add one additional bottle per day until you reach 4 bottles per day for women/6 bottles for men. Stay on that amount for 2-3 days and then back down by one bottle per day. After that 1/2-2 bottles per day maintenance as needed.

A few things to expect might be increased bowel activity and urination. This has been the most common comment so far. Overall feeling of not being puffy, stagnant with increased energy, stamina and overall sense of well-being. Diminished food cravings, feeling of satiety. Looking forward to hearing about your experiences.

Keep in mind the standard disclaimer, check with your doctor first, info provided only for educational and entertainment purposes. We do not prescribe, diagnose or make any claims.

You can pick up Suero Viv at many Herb Shoppes, Chiropractic Offices, Natural Health Practitioner offices and other specialty groups. Order online at The Health Chic Market or find someone near you.

Beyond Organic on a Budget

I received a note from one of our team members this week expressing concern that eating whole foods and beyond organically seemed impossible to do given limited financial means. Not the first time that I have helped a mom desperate to feed her children healthy nutritious foods make some tough food choices.

Believe it or not, I have had to make those exact same decisions for my family over the past decade. I love being a small business owner but sometimes the allure of "only" a $10 per hour regular paycheck has its appeal. Having to close your business unexpectedly for a few days due bad hurricanes, a dramatic sudden decline in customers when gas prices hit an all time high and other financial woes have at times had me making those same tough choices. At the end of the day we each have to ask ourselves, "how much can I afford to spend on food today?"

One of Jordan Rubin's goals for his new company, Beyond Organic is one million people feeding their families for free. My team is made up of primarily moms on a tight budget that truly understand the importance of nutrient dense whole foods. Their challenge is either finding them, paying for them or both. Beyond Organic offers solutions to both dilemma's- great food delivered to your door and an easy, affordable business model to help pay for your personal consumption.

A $40 investment is all it takes to get started. The $40 package includes a state of the art website and shopping cart. By sharing the message of the value of these nutritious foods with friends, family, and co-workers it shouldn't be long before you receive your first paycheck.

With this first paycheck I would buy one case of Amasai. Wholesale cost is $5 per bottle, add a buck each for shipping and it works out to $1.33 per 2oz serving. 2oz is the size of most popsicle molds- try to spring for the BPA-free ones. Make Amasai popsicles for your kids. Share the idea with two of your friends or neighbors and talk about the health benefits (basic info, more to follow.) Then offer one of your bottles at the cost of $9 each. If their kids like it- and we all know that they will then they can buy their own case as a preferred customer from your website and save. If you sell 4 bottles then you've paid for two for your family. It's that easy.

Granted, two bottles of Amasai per month doesn't constitute feeding your family for free. But two bottles is better than none and all of a sudden a Beyond Organic small part-time business just became a lot more obtainable as far as time and financial investment. It might take longer to build this way but remember- this is a ground floor opportunity. Imagine where you can be in a few years if you start now.

Beyond Organic, Reign Supreme Mountain Spring Water, Optimal Food and Drink for Optimal Living

"You're not sick; you're thirsty. Don't treat thirst with medication" according to Dr, F. Batmanghelidj, author and Water Cure advocate.

Imagine pure, natural water bubbling up from the earth, similar to what the ancients drank every day. That is what may be found in Jordan Rubin’s Reign Supreme Mountain Spring Water. Coming soon in October 2011.

Why is water so important for us to drink? Here is what the U.S. Department of Interior says,

“Water is of major importance to all living things; in some organisms, up to 90% of their body weight comes from water. Up to 60% of the human body is water, the brain is composed of 70% water, and the lungs are nearly 90% water. Lean muscle tissue contains about 75% water by weight, as is the brain; body fat contains 10% water and bone has 22% water. About 83% of our blood is water, which helps digest our food, transport waste, and control body temperature. Each day humans must replace 2.4 litres of water, some through drinking and the rest taken by the body from the foods eaten."

Water is essential to living, thinking and everything our bodies need to do to survive. We can not function properly without enough intake for our bodies. Average daily intake required for each person is calculated by one's health condition, activity level, age, and other factors. Without enough water, the body will become dehydrated. Dehydration is known to cause: headaches, stomach aches, constipation, muscle pain, fatigue, mental confusion, heart palpitations and a plethora of other symptoms. Water assists every major system in the body with its functions for life and sustenance. It is vital to our survival and well-being.

Everyone needs water. Why not have the purest form you can find? Beyond Organic will offer pure, natural water from their pristine spring. If you want to know more about the products that will be offered or to see how you can become a consumer or independent mission marketer for Beyond Organic, please see the links below.

Florida Enforces Tomato Bleaching/Chemical Sanitizing

I love shopping at the local farmer's market and when it comes to choosing produce many times I will choose local over organic (especially if the organics come from half-way across the globe.)

Today the sheriff's department raided the Plant City wholesaler's market (this is where the brokers pick-up their produce to take to local markets) confiscating all tomatoes that were not in boxes that have been certified as sanitized.

Apparently the State of Florida has decided to rigorously enforce guidelines for sanitizing Florida tomatoes, both organic and conventionally grown.  Read them for yourself.  I did contact the Department of Agriculture and they are working to try to get the guidelines changed for greenhouse and organics.  I will keep you posted.

Approved Sanitization Products (excerpt from A Guide to Tomato Good Agricultural Practices (T-GAP) &Tomato Best Management Practices (T-BMP)

a.  Peroxyacetic Acid - Peroxyacetic acid products currently registered by the Department, pursuant to Florida Statutes, Section 487.041 and Rule 5E-2.031, F.A.C., may be used for sanitization if labeled for this use.  The directions for concentration of product and adequate contact time must be followed closely and recorded in writing.

b.   Aqueous Chlorine Dioxide - Aqueous chlorine dioxide products currently registered by the Department, pursuant to Florida Statutes, Section 487.041 and Rule 5E-2.031, F.A.C., may be used for sanitization if labeled for this use.  The directions for concentration of product and adequate contact time must be followed closely and recorded in writing.

c.  Free chlorine - Products delivering free chlorine for overhead spray application may be used if the products are currently registered by the Department, pursuant to Florida Statutes, Section 487.041 and Rule 5E-2.031, F.A.C., labeled for this use, and used at the  concentration of product and contact time stated on the label.  Records of procedure must be followed closely and documented in writing.

d.  Gas-phase and Aqueous Ozone – Gas-phase or aqueous ozone may be used for tomato packing if it can be shown through a reproducible scientific study that the product, if used at a stipulated agent concentration and contact time can achieve a minimum 3 log reduction of Salmonella or like organisms.  Additionally, the ozone generator must bear an EPA establishment number and must be labeled for this use on fruits and vegetables and the user must meet OSHA standards for worker protection.  Label directions must be followed and procedures documented in writing.

e.  Other Chemical Usage – Any other chemical product, proposed for use for tomato packing, must be registered by the Department pursuant to Florida Statutes, Section 487.041 and Rule 5E-2.031, F.A.C., and labeled for this use.  Additionally, it must be shown through a reproducible scientific study that the product or process used can achieve a minimum 3 log reduction of Salmonella or like organisms.  Label directions must be followed and procedures documented in writing.
